Here's a fact that surprises almost everyone: diamonds are flammable. Not easily, not at any temperature you'd encounter in daily life — but chemically, diamonds are made of pure carbon, and carbon burns. Understanding why diamonds burn, and under what conditions, is a fascinating intersection of chemistry and fire science.
Diamonds are combustible at extremely high temperatures. A diamond will begin to oxidize (essentially catch fire) at around 1,292°F (700°C) in air, or 1,562°F (850°C) in pure oxygen. In most residential fires, which peak around 1,100°F (593°C), a diamond is unlikely to burn. But in an industrial fire or with a high-temperature flame, diamonds can be destroyed.
Why Diamonds Burn
Diamonds are the hardest natural material on earth and formed under extreme pressure deep in the earth — but they're composed entirely of carbon atoms arranged in a rigid crystal lattice. When exposed to sufficient heat and oxygen, the carbon atoms react with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, just like wood or paper burning. The chemical process is the same: C + O₂ → CO₂.
This is not just theoretical. Jewelers and gemologists have documented cases of diamonds being damaged or destroyed in house fires and industrial settings. Gold and platinum survive because they're metals with very high melting points, but carbon-based materials — including diamonds — can oxidize with enough heat.
What Happens in a House Fire?
Most house fires don't get hot enough to combust a diamond, but they can damage the stone. Intense, concentrated heat — like a blowtorch directed at a diamond — can pit and cloud the surface. A fire hot enough to sustain 1,292°F+ for an extended period (commercial building fires, industrial fires, or areas close to the origin point) poses a real risk of damaging or destroying diamonds in jewelry.
If you're concerned about preserving valuables in a fire, a fire safe rated for jewelry (not just paper documents) is the right choice. Paper fire safes are only rated to keep internal temperatures below 350°F, which protects paper but doesn't protect jewelry or other combustibles that require higher temperature protection.
What About Graphite?
Graphite — the material in pencils — is also pure carbon, like diamond. It burns at similar temperatures. The difference is entirely in the crystal structure: diamonds are arranged tetrahedrally under high pressure, graphite in flat hexagonal sheets. Both are carbon, both are combustible under the right conditions.
