Honey sits in a bear-shaped squeeze bottle on your kitchen shelf, and it doesn't look remotely dangerous. So is it flammable? The short answer is not really — but the longer answer reveals something interesting about how water content affects combustibility.
Honey is not flammable under normal conditions. Raw, unprocessed honey has a water content of 17–20%, which is enough to prevent it from igniting at typical temperatures. However, honey can burn if heated to very high temperatures (above 400°F / 204°C), and highly crystallized or very low-moisture honey is more susceptible to scorching and smoking.
What Happens When Honey Is Heated?
Honey begins to break down well before it reaches combustion temperature. At around 160–180°F (71–82°C), honey starts to lose its enzymes and some of its beneficial compounds. At higher temperatures, it starts to caramelize — the sugars brown and develop a burnt flavor. You can certainly get honey to smoke and char if you leave it in a pan over high heat, but getting it to actually sustain a flame requires sustained very high temperatures that don't occur in normal cooking.

Compare honey to something like cooking oil. Vegetable oil has a smoke point around 400°F (204°C) and a flash point around 600°F (316°C) — at which point it can sustain a flame if ignited. Honey's high water content keeps it from reaching these temperatures in practice. The water absorbs heat and turns to steam before the sugars can combust.
Once honey has been significantly dehydrated — through extensive heating or crystallization — the risk profile changes slightly, but it still wouldn't be described as flammable in any meaningful fire safety context.
