How This Salary Calculator Works
This calculator uses official salary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2024, the most recent data available). We map your experience level to the appropriate salary percentile:
- Entry Level / Probationary: 10th percentile — what brand new firefighters typically earn
- 1-4 Years: 25th percentile — early career with some experience
- 5-10 Years (Mid-Career): 50th percentile (median) — the typical firefighter salary
- 10-20 Years (Senior): 75th percentile — experienced firefighters and engineers
- 20+ Years / Officer Rank: 90th percentile — captains, battalion chiefs, and senior officers
Keep in mind these are base salaries and don’t include overtime, hazard pay, or benefits — which can add 20-40% to total compensation. For a deeper dive into your state’s firefighter salary data, click the link in your results to see the full breakdown.
